Every Christian white American who is ready to begin to understand his/her own ethnic identity and what that means in our multiethnic world should read Being White. It sets an excellent foundation for understanding our white identity, a process that most white Americans never even bother to go through. Paula and Doug affirm the good things and call out the bad things in white values and living. They don’t stop there, though – they equip their white readers with practical tools to begin healing and change both within themselves and in the multiethnic world around them. Especially given the national conversation on race that has been struck up in the wake of Trayvon Martin, Ferguson, Immigration, 9/11, ISIS, etc., this is a must-read for white Christians if we hope to be a meaningful part of that conversation and the necessary response. Before you begin reading, make sure that you go in with a humble heart. Once you begin, even if you read something challenging or difficult, continue reading! You will be shaped to be more like Christ, with your white identity and all. I’ll post my own personal thoughts and reflections out of this book soon, so be sure to look out for that.
