J.J. Abrams delivers the movie we’ve been looking for with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Here are some quick, spoiler-free thoughts and impressions. First, as expected, the movie is beautifully shot, with deep vibrant colors and breathtaking camera angles. Abrams recaptures the grit and realism of the original trilogy, and seamlessly weaves in what CGI he uses.
Second, the acting is on point, far superior to the train wreck that was the prequels. Daisy Ridley (Rey) and John Boyega (Finn) are convincing, funny, and emotionally engaging. This next trilogy (or whatever the plan is for the franchise) is safe in their hands. (Hats off to John, by the way, for ignoring the racist criticism and owning this role!) And of course it was fun to have the original cast, especially Harrison Ford, reunite to pass the baton to this next generation. The only casting I wasn’t crazy about was Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, but even that grew on me by the end.
Finally, the plot itself very much embraces the style and pattern of the original trilogy, while setting up the series for something fresh and new. I’m incredibly impressed at how well Abrams was able to keep it under wraps (I managed to see only 1 spoiler before my viewing), and I suggest you see it before someone ruins it for you! Abrams also introduces enough mystery and intrigue throughout the film that they pull the viewer through and then leave you wanting more.
The Force Awakens currently enjoys a 95% critic score and 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and I agree exactly – I give it a 4.5/5 star rating. If you love Star Wars, this one is well worth seeing in theaters!
